Domenico Cimarosa Concerto for two Flutes (1793)
The Italian Domenico Cimarosa was a central figure in eighteenth-century
comic opera: his seventy-six completed operas (the best known being 'A Secret
Marriage') established a reputation unparalleled in Italy until the emergence
of Rossini. Although was an able violinist and keyboard player (having studied
at the Naples Conservatoire), only a handful of his considerably wide instrumental
works are occasionally revived. They are slight in structure and content,
with gracious melodies, and are written in a style similar to Mozart. The
concerto for two flutes was written in 1793 whilst Cimarosa was Kapellmeister
to Emperor Leopold II in Vienna. It is a typical example of his elegant
instrumental writing, which also incorporates elements of light hearted
comedy from his operas.
